Chronic pleuritic pain in four patients with asbestos induced pleural fibrosis.
Four patients occupationally exposed to asbestos, each suffering at least eight years of disabling, persistent, and often bilateral pleuritic pain are described. Radiographic evidence of pleural disease ranged from plaques seen only on computed tomography to typical bilateral plaques or diffuse thickening to extensive diffuse and circumscribed pleural fibrosis and calcification. There was no hi...
متن کاملAsbestosis, pleural plaques and diffuse pleural thickening: three distinct benign responses to asbestos exposure.
The aim of this study was to investigate by computed tomography (CT) whether asbestosis, diffuse pleural thickening and/or pleural plaques are statistically associated. We also tried to find criteria to differentiate between diffuse and circumscribed pleural thickening. From 231 exposed workers, only those subjects whose radiograph showed neither bilateral calcified pleural plaques nor small pu...
متن کاملCASE STUDY Familial extensive idiopathic bilateral pleural fibrosis
The authors report three sisters with bilateral isolated apical pleural fibrosis of unknown origin, which did not respond to empirical antituberculosis therapy and oral corticosteroids. The disease evolved in an unrelenting fashion producing pleural fibrosis at the lung bases and leading to the death of two sisters and to lung transplantation in the other one. There was no history of other fami...
متن کاملIsolated fourth nerve palsy
Isolated fourth nerve palsy is usually benign. The most common etiologies are congenital, traumatic, ischemic, and idiopathic causes. Extensive evaluations for isolated fourth nerve palsies are generally not indicated, but more intensive evaluation for underlying etiology may be necessary for nonisolated or bilateral fourth nerve palsies. Evaluation of ocular torsion enables differentiation of ...
متن کاملPleural fluid mesothelin for the differential diagnosis of exudative pleural effusions.
BACKGROUND Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a highly aggressive tumor that can be difficult to diagnose, resulting in a delayed diagnosis in some cases. Recent studies have reported that determination of soluble mesothelin-related peptides (SMRP) in pleural fluid may be a promising marker for use in the diagnosis of MM. PATIENTS AND METHODS Pleural fluid SMRP concentration was measured in 68 pa...
